The $150,000 Hockey Mom

The fraud that is Sarah Palin becomes more obvious on a daily basis.

I don't understand the criticism here. You think she's a fraud because the RNC bought her nice clothes? Isn't this actually an argument that she really is a "hockey mom," because she didn't already have an expensive wardrobe? I think you're reaching here.

The fraud is that she is not, in any way, what she is portrayed to be. She's entirely a creation of the McCain campaign, and this is one more example of it.

Well I have a different take... she and the Rupublican party for weeks and 24/7 over the last few days have professed she's the "real" America, she's a hockey mom, she's one of you, she sold the jet on ebay and fired the chef, blah blah blah. But I'll bet my salary for one year, most "Real Americans" as she has campaigned to and described, can't really relate to spending 150K in 3 months on clothes. Let alone during one of our worst financial crisis in they history of this country.

She never had any pull with me, and personally it's a non-issue just like John Edwars $400 haircut. But it's bad because people can really wrap their heads around this issue, more so than Troopergate or her gaffes about what a Vice President does, etc. Can't really write this off as the MSM being mean or bias or picking on poor Palin.

I think this exchange pretty much sums up everything I feel as to the why. Again it's a non issue with me.

Toni, you covered it well.

It's a non-issue for me personally as well. I don't care what she wears. I already know she's a phony.

But like you said, this is a very tangible way that reality contradicts the mythos they've built up around her. It's something people can relate to.

We all know candidates have to look their best, but $150K for clothes is simply the wrong move at the wrong time.

Voters seem to want to be able to indentify with their candidates and perhaps have a beer with them. A strength of Palin was her identity as a Hockey Mom. But she's not dressing like one and that really sends a false note that hopefully will hit home to some.

In contrast, when Michelle Obama was on the view many weeks ago, she was wearing a cute little black and white dress that was off the rack from Penney's (or some place like that). I remember there was a follow-up story about it, and how the store had sold many copies of the same dress after Michelle wore it publically. Now that is identifying with someone.

How many Palin admirers will be able to rush out for their 150K wardrobe? Besides Cindy McCain of course.

The issue of the troublesome dollar amount is wholly separate from whether this exposes Palin as a fraud. I completely agree that it is the wrong news story at the wrong time. But it does nothing to discredit the truthfulness of her background. Granted, I don't personally think that being a person of mediocre intellect and accomplishment is a valuable background, but that is who she was until her inexplicable rise through politics. Her wearing some nice clothes that you are given doesn't change that... lipstick on a pig, and all that.

Err.. so whats the big deal?

Like Obama never wore an expensive suit. He is as choosy about potraying himself like any other politician..its just that we havn't seen his bills yet.

Thanks,
